About This Project
‘Built2Scale’ began as a GMTK Game Jam project with the theme of “Built to Scale”. I lead development as a team of 6 working on most parts of the game, such as menus, UI integrations and gameplay. The game was completed within 72 hours within the submission deadline of the Jam.
What is Built2Scale?
Built2Scale is an arcade platformer. The name of the game is a play on the theme of the Jam, as you’ll play as a chicken with a “Built” body type. The goal of the game is to reach the scales while balancing a score within range of the target score. As your player moves, your score drains, mimicking calories. Collecting the food around you increases the score, as well as the scale of your character, making for a silly, yet competitive multiplayer game.

What I Learned From This Project
-
I learned how create multiplayer games and how to differentiate multiplayer input. I put this knowledge to use in my current game “Keaton’s Adventure”.
-
I met all teammates, learned about them and assessed their skillset, then delegated roles that suited them best. as a generalist, I was familiar with most of the roles, and as such, made myself available to help everyone when needed.
-
As this was my first jam where I took a lead role, I needed to make sure the team knew exactly what was needed to be done and at what time, which allowed me to properly gauge what we had time for and what we didn’t.
-
As the lead gameplay programmer, I needed to be able to read other’s code. This game jam gave me the experience to interpret and modify code that wasn’t my own.
